Step 3 - Migration
Upload the archive files
If you are migrating from Yahoo Groups, this is where you can submit the archive files containing the messages.
If you want to start with an empty forum, you can skip this step.
Upload the Message Archives from Yahoo Groups
We can convert the message archives from two different types of backup files: PG Offline and Yahoo MBox
PG Offline:
This is the preferred method as PG Offline files are more reliable than MBox. PG Offline is a Windows program that was made specifically to download and display Yahoo Groups. It was very efficient at downloading the messages from Yahoo including attachments, files, photos and links. It allows you to view multiple groups easily and with powerful search tools. We used it to download over 70 health-related YahooGroups complete with attachments, files, photos and links and you can download any or all of those groups from our sister website.
If you have a copy of your group's archives in the PG Offline program, you need to export the archive to send to us as follows:
- While using PG Offline, first select the group to export on the left and then File / Export to Folder
- A dialogue window appears "Groups Export". Click on Browse, select the location you want to save the archive, type the name of your group in the "File name" field and click on Save.
- Now click on Export and wait for the pg4 file to be created - this can take some time, go and have a tea or coffee break.
- Finally, use the form below to submit the file to us.
Yahoo Groups MBox format:
If you do not have the PG Offline backup of your YahooGroup, there is a good chance you, or a member of your group, has asked for a data download of your group from Yahoo.
Follow the instructions from Yahoo to to download your group's files and obtain the file messages.zip and upload it below. If you do not have the messages file yourself, ask your members - there is a good chance one of them has a copy of this zip archive file. Send it to us and we will do our best to convert and upload your message archives below.
If you have both types of file, you can upload them both.
Important: As our website is not uploading large files reliably, we ask you to instead upload your files to a file sharing website (OneList, DropBox, Mega, etc.) and give us the link for us to download the files from.
